Newscast Media HOUSTON—Houston Mayor Annise Parker has finally withdrawn the subpoenas against the pastors, in which she demanded they submit their sermons to her office for inspection. Parker and her fellow Democrats came under fire even from fellow liberals because she was violating the pastors' freedom of speech that is protected by the First Amendment.
Newscast Media reported the original story here, in which the mayor wanted to inspect the sermons for anti-gay content. "After much contemplation and discussion, I am directing the city legal department to withdraw the subpoenas issued to the five Houston pastors who delivered the petitions, the anti-HERO petitions, to the city of Houston and who indicated that they were responsible for the overall petition effort," said Parker on Wednesday at a press conference. "It is extremely important to me to protect our Equal Rights Ordinance from repeal, and it is extremely important to me to make sure that every Houstonian knows that their lives are valid and protected and acknowledged," Parker continued. "We are going to continue to vigorously defend our ordiance against repeal efforts," she added. After the subpoenas were issued, there was a backlash from liberals, while Conservatives led by former Gov. Mike Huckabee, stood in solidarity with the five pastors who had been subpoenaed.
