UN Security Council Urges More Effort On Ebola Fight
by Joseph Earnest October 16, 2014
Newscast Media NEW YORK—The UN Security Council has called on the international community to step up its efforts to curb the spread of the deadly Ebola outbreak.
Warning that Ebola is posing a serious threat to the world peace and security, the Security Council also urged the international community to "accelerate and dramatically expand the provision of resources and financial and material assistance" to the West African countries most devastated by the fatal virus. Meanwhile, US President Barack Obama called on the world leaders to take serious measures to stop the epidemic. "If we are not responding internationally in an effective way… then we could have problems," Obama said on Wednesday after a crisis meeting with his cabinet officials over Ebola. Obama’s comments came shortly after another American healthcare worker was tested positive for Ebola at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. On Tuesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that Ebola's mortality rate had reached 70 percent, adding that the epidemic’s infection rate is likely to exceed 10,000 new cases per week in the next two months. The Ebola epidemic has so far claimed the lives of 4,447 people all around the world, while more than 8,914 people have been infected. Ebola is a form of hemorrhagic fever whose symptoms are diarrhea, vomiting and bleeding. The virus spreads through direct contact with infected blood, feces or sweat. It can also be spread through sexual contact or the unprotected handling of contaminated corpses. There is currently no known cure for Ebola. Add Comments>> Source: Press TV
