Arizona shuts down all speed cameras after motorists refuse to pay fines
by Joseph Ernest July 16, 2010 Newscast Media -- After several complaints from citizens that the speed cameras installed in Arizona were used to generate profits rather than promote safety, the program has now ended and the cameras are coming down. The state Department of Public Safety decided against renewing the contract they had with camera vendor Redflex Traffic Systems after Gov. Jan Brewer at the beginning of 2010 indicated that she planned to shut down the program. The program was spearhead by then governor Janet Napolitano and since September 2008, they have taken 2.7 million pictures of speeding motorists, but only about 16 percent of the motorists paid their tickets while the rest discarded them.
