Newscast Media WASHINGTON—Senator Rand Paul has announced today he is running for president to return to restore liberty and prosperity for ourselves and for future generations. He is the second candidate after Sen. Ted Cruz to announce his White House bid.
Both Cruz and Paul are from Texas, and if Gov. Rick Perry and Jeb Bush announce their intentions to run, the GOP field will have four Texas-raised candidates who have their eyes on 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Rand Paul made his initial announcement through his Web site, and is expected to give a more detailed speech later on.
"I am running for president to return our country to the principles of liberty and limited government," the statement read.
Son of former Senator Ron Paul, who failed three times to secure the GOP nomination, Rand Paul doesn't exactly consider himself a Libertarian like his father, he considers himself a Conservative, although he is the only one who supports the decriminalization of marijuana use.
Paul will have to face Tea Party-favored Ted Cruz, who is considered the most Conservative senator, thereafter, whoever triumphs over the other would have to face the deep-pocketed mainstream Republican candidates like Jeb Bush.
The 52-year-old Senator from Kentucky is a doctor specializing in ophthalmology, who has three sons from his marriage of 24 years to Kelley Ashby Paul. Add Comments>>
