Lives of 529 Muslim Brotherhood Suspects in The Hands Of Mufti
by Joseph Earnest March 24, 2014
Newscast Media CAIRO—Minya Criminal Court submitted documents of 529 suspects affiliatedwith the Muslim Brotherhood to the mufti to decide whether they will receive the death sentence.
In Egypt, death sentence rulings are sent to the mufti, who gives the last approval before the sentence is carried out. Many see the mufti as a rubber stamp on the court decision.
The court previously cleared 16 suspects and has now set 28 April as the final pronouncement of the verdict.
Suspects faced charges of involvement in violence in Matay town in Minya following the dispersal of the Rabaa al-Adaweya sit-in in August. The trial sessions started on Saturday.
Most of the suspects are being tried in absentia, since they are at large. The deaths sentences handed down as result of this trial, can be appealed, a lawyer said. Source: Al Masry Al Youm
