Clinton brokers US, Poland missile shield deal on trip to Poland by Joseph Ernest July4, 2010
Newscast Media -- The controversial U.S. missile defense shield plan was resurrected when U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited Poland on July 3, and oversaw the signing of the agreement.
Clinton met with reporters and said, "This is purely a defense system. It is not directed at Russia. It doesn't threaten Russia." Clinton attended the signing of the plan between U.S. ambassador to Poland, Lee Feinstein, and Deputy Foreign Minister Jacek Nader.
The previous U.S. administration led by George W. Bush had signed an agreement in which Poland would host a permanent U.S. base with missiles near the Baltic Sea, however, Barack Obama, upon entering office nullified the Bush deal aimed to set up a defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic. Poland and the U.S say the shield is designed to thwart any ballistic missile threats from countries like Iran, that may target nations in Europe. Add comments>>
