Barack Obama authorizes additional troops to be sent to Iraq

Newscast Media WASHINGTON—President Barack Obama has authorized 1,500 more American troops to be sent to Iraq in non-combat roles. White House press secretary Josh Earnest said on November 7, that the troops would train, advise, and assist Iraqi security forces, including Kurdish Peshmerga forces, in their fight against Islamic State (IS) militants. It said Obama authorized the additional personnel to operate at Iraqi military facilities outside Baghdad and Irbil, where U.S. noncombat troops are currently operating. The White House is to ask Congress for $5.6 billion for operations against the IS fighters in Iraq and Syria, including $1.6 billion for the new "Iraq Train and Equip Fund." Add Comments>>
