Obama lays out plan to shut down Guantanamo Bay

by Joseph Earnest February 23, 2016

Newscast Media WASHINGTONAs he revealed his plans to shut down Guantanamo Bay detention facility, President Barack Obama said that Guantanamo Bay does not advance our national security -- it undermines it. He also said it is counterproductive to the fight against terrorists, because they use it as propaganda in their efforts to recruit.

"Guantanamo harms our partnerships with allies and other countries whose cooperation we need against terrorism," Obama said.  "When I talk to other world leaders, they bring up the fact that Guantanamo is not resolved," he added.

Obama blames Congress for repeatedly imposing restrictions aimed at preventing his administration from closing Guantanamo, but said the Defense Department is submitting to Congress a plan for finally closing the detention facility once and for all.

"It’s a plan that reflects the hard work of my entire national security team...This plan has my full support.  It reflects our best thinking on how to best go after terrorists and deal with those who we may capture," Obama said.

As for what to do with the prisoners, Obama said he would secure the transfer of 35 out of the 91 detainees to other countries--that have already been approved for transfer.

He acknowledged that it will require bipartisan support, open, honest, good-faith dialogue about how to best ensure the closure of Guantanamo. Add Comments>>
