Britain to host conference on how to tackle Boko Haram

Newscast Media LONDON—British Foreign Secretary William Hague will host an international ministerial meeting in London on June 12, seeking to discuss security in northern Nigeria and coordinate international efforts to tackle Boko Haram.
"The appalling abduction of the Nigerian school girls underlines the dreadful risk posed to women and girls in conflict and why we are mobilizing the world to tackle sexual violence in conflict," Hague said Thursday in a statement.
The meeting will be held in the margins of the World Summit on Ending Sexual Violence in Conflict to be hosted by Hague and American actress Angelina Jolie in London from June 10-13.
The gathering will bring together leaders from Nigeria, Benin, Chad, Cameroon, Niger, Britain, the United States, France, Canada and the European Union (EU) to talk about coordinated efforts necessary to defeat Boko Haram, the statement said.
Boko Haram, a radical sect seeking to enforce the Islamic Sharia law in the constitution of Nigeria, had been behind deadly attacks in the country since 2009. The sect recently claimed responsibility for the mid-April abduction of more than 200 school girls in northeastern state of Borno.
"Since the appalling abductions of over 200 school girls in Chibok by Boko Haram, the international community has worked together closely to support Nigeria in the fight against terrorism," Hague noted.
The foreign secretary said Britain and Nigeria had reached agreements on intelligence sharing, coordinated border patrols and wider action, including supporting the victims of sexual violence and the empowerment of women and girls.
"The London Ministerial on Security in Northern Nigeria will build on these agreements and consider further options to combat terrorism in Northern Nigeria. This shows the determination of those in the region, with the support of the international community, to defeat Boko Haram," he added.
At a joint press conference with U.S. President Barack Obama at the G7 meeting on Thursday, British Prime Minister David Cameron said: "In the longer term, we stand ready to provide more practical assistance to help the Nigerians and the region to strengthen their defense and security institutions and to develop the expertise needed to counter these barbaric extremists."
