Newscast Media SAN JOSEApple has unveiled its new product in the smartwatch market. The Apple Watch will allow users to make and receive calls and messages and track health and fitness.

Apple revealed its new smartwatch at a media event on Monday in San Francisco, as well as updates to its MacBook laptop computer and Apple TV television service.

"It's like having a coach on your wrist," Apple chief executive Tim Cook said. According to Cook, the watch can make calls via a tethered iPhone, open email, control music, pay for groceries, and monitor individual fitness. The watch's battery has been marketed to last 18 hours a day.

The watch is also integrated with Apple Pay's mobile wallet and can be also used to view pictures, monitor news and connect to social media platforms.

"Now it's on your wrist, not in your pocket or your pocketbook," Cook said.

Apple is a somewhat late entry to the smartwatch market, with South Korean giants Samsung and LG, Japan's Sony and startups such as Pebble having established products.

Cook said the Apple Watch would cost between $349 (320 euros) and $1,049 (960 euros) in the United States for extra features. A special solid gold edition would cost upwards of $10,000.   Add Comments>>
