Russia: Kofi Annan pushed out by backers of military intervention
by Joseph Earnest August 3, 2012
Newscast Media WASHINGTON, D.C.—When Kofi Annan announced his resignation as the Arab League envoy to Syria, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov wrote on his Twitter account, Friday morning, "Annan's decision against extending his mandate as the UN envoy to Syria raises loads of questions regarding the future of this country. He is an honest international mediator but someone wants to push him out of the game to open the gates for forceful actions. This is obvious."
The Russians believe an outside hand played a major role in forcing Annan to relinquish the post he assumed in February. Annan also authored a six-point peace plan aimed at ending the Syrian conflict.
Meanwhile, the Jerusalem Post is reporting that Russia is sending three navy vessels with roughly 360 marines onboard the ships that are already in the Mediterranean, and are scheduled to arrive in Tartus by the end of this week or early next week. (pop-up)
However, the Times of Israel published a contradicting report in which Russia's Defense Ministry dismissed the report about sending warships to Syria, and said in a statement that it had no such plans. (pop-up) The West is pushing for President Bashar al-Assad's ouster, while Russia and China are trying to prevent outside interference in Syria. Add Comments>>
