U.S. deploys F-22 fighter jets to Al-Dafra air base in UAE
by Joseph Earnest May 1, 2012 Newscast Media WASHINGTON, D.C.— The U.S. has reportedly deployed an unspecified number of F-22 fighter jets to Al-Dafra air base which is South of the Strait of Hormuz, according to media reports. The F-22 is considered the best fighter jet, but the single-seat, twin-engine fifth-generation fighter aircraft that uses stealth technology, has never been combat-proven.
Major Mary Danner-Jones, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Air Force, said, "The United States Air Force has deployed F-22s to Southwest Asia. Such deployments strengthen military-to-military relationships, promote sovereign and regional security, improve combined tactical air operations, and enhance interoperability of forces, equipment and procedures," according to a PBS article.
The deployment comes as the Iran Six, which includes the United States and Russia, is preparing for talks with Iran on its controversial nuclear program.
Iran's Defense Minister responded by saying, "Basing American F-22 in an Emirate's base is a harmful action and damages regional security," according to CBS news. "We consider such (military) presence in the region as to be useless and
harmful and more aimed at creating a psychological ploy and an insecure
atmosphere in the region," Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General
Ahmad Vahidi said, "We don't see it useful."
