Puerto Rico's government requires rebirth of all its citizens by Joseph Ernest June 30, 2010
Newscast Media -- Starting July, Puerto Rico's government will issue new birth certificates to all Puerto Ricans in an effort to curb identity theft. The U.S. territory is home to 3.9 million inhabitants with an additional 1.4 million Puerto Ricans living in the U.S.
After pressure from the U.S. government, legislators in Puerto Rico voted to nullify all existing birth certificates and replace them with the new ones that are more tamper-resistant. The U.S State Department found that 40 percent of fake U.S. passports can be traced back to forged Puerto Rican birth certificates.
In the U.S., Latino groups are oppose the move to reissue birth certificates as unncessary, and consider it one more hassle they will have to deal with as they reapply for new ones. The old birth certificates will be invalid as of September 30, 2010. Puerto Rico was a Spanish territory, but was captured by Americans and has been part of U.S land since 1898. (Add Comments)
