Kremlin responds to U.S. probe into Russian athletes' doping

 doping scandal

by Joseph Earnest May 18, 2016

Newscast Media MOSCOWRussia says it does not accept the application of American justice outside the country’s jurisdiction following a report saying the U.S. Justice Department had opened a criminal investigation into alleged state-sponsored doping by dozens of Russian athletes.

"We treat with a certain skepticism and a certain degree of incomprehension and aversion the cases of extraterritorial application of the jurisdiction of U.S. courts which have become pretty widespread lately," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on May 18.

A New York Times report says the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York is examining the role of Russian government officials, coaches, athletes, and others as part of the probe.

The reported investigation comes amid a growing scandal surrounding Russian sports and doping allegations.

Last week, a former Russian anti-doping official described for The New York Times an elaborate system to hide doping results by Russian athletes at the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games.    Add Comments>>
