CENTCOM Twitter feed conveniently hacked by ISIL under questionable motive

Newscast Media HOUSTON—Just as Barack Obama was unveiling a series of bills whose aim is to improve cybersecurity and curb identity theft, the identity of the U.S. Central Command Twitter and YouTube accounts were allegedly hijacked by Islamic State operatives.

The operatives posted a series of tweets on the CENTCOM feed, and also released information that appeared to be private. One of the messages posts read:

"You'll see no mercy infidels. ISIS is already here, we are in your PCs, in each military base, with Allah's permission we are in CENTCOM now."

Twitter has since disabled the U.S. Central Command account to prevent further postings by the intruder. The timing of the attack is rather suspect and questionable.

The questions we are now confronted with are: was this attack legitimately launched by ISIL, or was it an inside job? Why would Islamic State launch the attack on a day that coincided with one that Obama was unveiling cybersecurity measures, knowing that on such a day, the government itself would be on high alert on all their Internet accounts to demonstrate to the nation their preparedness on the subject? Even if ISIL was able to bypass all the cybersecurity measures put in place by the U.S. Central Command, why would they be foolish to blow their cover early, rather than do it covertly at a later date to maximize their intended damage? If this is an inside job, was it designed to convince Americans that the government is justified in taking extensive control over the Internet and monitor online activities beyond the ones the president plans to mention in the State of the Union address on January 20?

Meanwhile, at the Federal Trade Commission offices today, President Obama highlighted measures he will discuss in the State of the Union, and unveiled the next steps in his comprehensive approach to enhancing consumers’ security, tackling identity theft, and improving privacy online and in the classroom.
