Conservative leaders calling for Puerto Rico statehood
by Napp Nazworth
Newscast Media WASHINGTON, D.C.—A coalition of conservative leaders will call on fellow conservatives to support letting Puerto Rico decide whether it will become the 51st state.
The announcement will come at a Tuesday morning press conference with Alfonso Aguilar, executive director of the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles; Luis Fortuno, former Republican Governor of Puerto Rico; Niger Innis, national outreach director for TheTeaParty.net; Dr. Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission and executive editor of The Christian Post; Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform; and Dr. Hernan Padilla, former mayor of San Juan and the first Hispanic chair of U.S. Conference of Mayors.
In a Monday interview with The Christian Post, Aguilar said they will make an argument for why conservatives should support statehood. The United States was founded because England did not recognize the natural rights of citizens in its American colonies, Aguilar explained, and “ironically, that is what the federal government is now doing to Puerto Rico.”
Puerto Ricans are citizens, but they do not have the full rights of citizenship. Puerto Ricans have served in the U.S. military, yet they cannot vote for the president and they do not have full representation in Congress. (Puerto Rico has one non-voting delegate.)
“Not only is it not democratic, it goes against the very soul and ideas of the Founding,” Aguilar added. “We were created as a republic, not an empire.”
Some Republicans may be concerned that, if given statehood, Puerto Rico would vote Democratic for president and their U.S. senators. Aguilar said these concerns are unfounded. Before this month, Puerto Rico had a Republican governor, Republican House, Republican Senate and a majority of the municipalities were held by Republicans. Additionally, over 70 percent of Puerto Ricans oppose same-sex marriage and oppose abortion, Aguilar added.

The people of Puerto Rico is matured enough to know right from wrong, Estado 51 NOW
As Puerto Rican, as well as an American citizen, I appreciate the gentleness of those distinguished conservative leaders to support our will of becoming the 51st state of the United States of America. It is an act of education, kindness, and democracy, above all, that we are given the opportunity of being attentively heard at the presentation of the just & democratic results obtained at our last plesbicite held in November 6, 2012, where 54% of Puerto Ricans voted against the present territorial status and almost 62% voted in favor of statehood. THESE RESULTS MUST BE RESPECTED AND CONSIDERED FOR SO MANY REASONS, AMONG THEM I CAN BRIEFLY STATE A FEW.
We deserve the right to vote for the president and to have representatives in Congress because our military men have served with honor & courage for decades at the different USA wars. They have bravely defended our nation’s democracy with their hearts & strength. Thousands have lost their valuable lives or their health, my husband was one, defending the US country. Thousands continue active at the military service inland & in different countries of the world. Hundreds of our men & women have serve your country as distinguished professionals in science, in medicine, in politics, in engineering, in law, in business, as actors or actresses, at NASA, in education, as simple workers in different industries. All of them have helped and contributed in the development the economy of our glorious country of the USA. We have paid taxes directly or indirectly when buying food, goods & services from your country or in your country. We have paid the Social Security, and we don’t get the same benefits from it as the residents in homeland. Sometimes we don’t have the same rights to buy some goods from your country, for we are sometimes treated as foreigners, and this merchandise is not delivered or higher taxes are imposed. The same thing happens with our university students when they apply to study at your country. They are treated as foreigners.
In my own case, I consider that I deserve to enjoy a 1st class citizenship as any other US American because I have personally worked hard all my life being loyal to your country in many ways, specially by teaching this beautiful universal language, English, for 32 yrs to university students in my own country, PR at IAU, one of the most outstanding university here. I also worked 1 yr as a bilingual teacher in Hartford, Connecticut.
We want to enjoy statehood with all the rights and corresponding responsibilities.
